Drawing Workshop on David Hammons in ASL
Join teaching artist Nic Annette Miller and guest artist Yusuf Yahya for an online participatory drawing workshop in American Sign Language (ASL) that will explore performative forms of image making inspired by David Hammons: Body Prints, 1968-1979, on view through May 23, 2021 at The Drawing Center in SoHo, New York. Following the drawing activity, participants will engage in a discussion that will reflect on Hammons's practice and the Black Deaf experience with an emphasis on Black American Sign Language (BASL). Hammons use of his own body, as both a drawing tool and printing plate, contains techniques, concepts, and messages that depict the ordinary joys as well as the entrenched injustices of living as a Black man in America. Participants will create monoprints using common household items utilizing a process similar to Hammons’ large-scale body prints. Please make sure to review the materials list below.
