Brooklyn Talks: Contemporary Artists in Practice
Four contemporary artists, whose works were recently added to the collection, explore their practice in rapid-fire conversations with curators. Dare Turner, Curator of Indigenous Art, begins the evening by moderating a discussion with Hayden Haynes and Samantha Jacobs about their collaborations. Jacobs is a Seneca artist of the Turtle Clan from the Cattaraugus Territory, who is known for her beaded moccasins, quillwork, moose embroidery, and caribou hair tufting. A citizen of the Seneca Nation and Deer Clan, Haynes creates works of photography, found objects, and antler carvings that are dedicated to healing—an expression of Hodinöhsö:ni’ life today. Pauline Vermare, Phillip and Edith Leonian Curator of Photography, speaks with photographer and director Diana Markosian, whose approach to documentary storytelling expands the genre’s boundaries. Carmen Hermo, former Associate Curator of the Center for Feminist Art, speaks with Melissa Joseph, whose work is on view in The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition. Through artwork that pairs needle felting and found objects, Joseph considers themes of memory, family history, and the politics of how people occupy space. Schedule 7–7:30 pm Hayden Haynes, Samantha Jacobs, and Dare Turner 7:30–8 pm Diana Markosian and Pauline Vermare 8–8:30 pm Melissa Joseph and Carmen Hermo Tickets are $20 and include after-hours access to Toward Joy: New Frameworks for American Art and The Brooklyn Artists Exhibition.
